TRAI's New Regulation for the Television and Broadcasting

With TRAI's New Regulation for the Television and Broadcasting Sector, Consumers have the freedom to select Television (TV) Channels of their choice.

The new tariff order by TRAI, in most likelihood, will reduce the price you pay for watching television if you make an economic choice of channels. Your payment to the Service Provider has two components. The first one is called the Network Capacity Fee (NCF). It is like a rental charge of the TV connection to your home. The other is the price of any pay channels that you select.

The new framework mandates all operators, including DTH, cable service provider or multi-system operator, to have a base package of 100 channels. Out of the list of 100 TV channels in the base package, you will have to deselect any number of FTA/ Free channels of your choice and add pay channels of equal number. The overall limit cannot cross 100.

The MRP of NCF is maximum Rs. 130 per month for 100 TV channels. You can select any FTA/Free channel, pay channel or a bouquet(s) of pay channel as per your choice. If you want to increase the capacity (because you want to watch more than 100 channels), you can do so by paying an additional amount of Rs. 20 for 25 additional channels. As an example, suppose you want to watch 110 channels, you may be charged an amount not exceeding Rs 150 (Rs 130 + Rs 20) per month. If you want to watch 150 channels, you pay another 20 rupees for the slab 125-150 channels.
TV Channels come in two flavours from the price point. Some are free and others are paid channels. The MRP of paid channels is shown in rupees per month. No money's paid for free to Air (FTA) channel. . The latest list by TRAI shows that there are 330 pay TV channels and 535 FTA channels.

As you select the channels, the MRP will continue to be updated in the Price-bar. If you select a free channel and inclusion of this channel does not affect your rental, then the value will not change. However, if you add a pay channel without changing the NCF slab, then the value will increase by the price of the additional channel you chose. This is similar to a shopping cart in your online shopping experience.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launches PSLV C-44 with Microsat R, a military application satellite, and Kalamsat, a 10cm cubesat made by students, at 11.37pm on Thursday from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This is first flight with a new variant of PSLV called PSLV-DL with two strap-ons, each carrying 12.2-tonne of solid propellent. The launch is PSLV’s 46th flight which injected a 740kg imaging satellite for military applications into orbit with precision. Congratulating the team for the successful mission, Isro chairman K Sivan said this was the first that PSLV was “flown to the lowest orbit.” PS4 is the smallest of the stages in size with a height of 2.5m and a diameter of 1.34m carrying 1.6 tonne propellent. With two liquid engines applying a thrust of 7.6kN each, PS4 is responsible for the correct injection of the payloads into their respective desired orbits.
